What Is Child Benefit?
Child Benefit is a monthly payment made to the parents or guardians of children. It is paid by the Department of Social Protection for all qualifying children — it is not means-tested, so your income does not affect the amount you receive. It is paid for children up to age 16, and up to age 18 if the child is in full-time education or has a disability.
How Much Is It?
The current rate (2025) is €140 per month per child. Multiple birth bonus: twins receive 1.5x the normal rate; triplets or more receive double. Check gov.ie for the current rate as it is reviewed at Budget time.
Habitual Residence Condition
To qualify, you must satisfy the Habitual Residence Condition (HRC) — you must demonstrate that Ireland is your usual place of residence. Factors considered include how long you have been in Ireland, your employment status, your housing situation, and your stated intention to remain. EU/EEA citizens who have just arrived and started work are generally able to satisfy the HRC. If you have just arrived and are not yet working, it may take longer.
Who Can Apply
- The child's parent or guardian must be habitually resident in Ireland
- EU/EEA citizens living and working in Ireland generally qualify
- Non-EU citizens with leave to remain (Stamp 4, Stamp 1, etc.) also qualify, subject to HRC
- International protection applicants may qualify — contact the Department of Social Protection
How to Apply
Complete the Child Benefit application form (CB1), available at mywelfare.ie or from your local Intreo/social welfare office. Attach your child's birth certificate (and, if applicable, adoption order). Return it to the Child Benefit Section at the Department of Social Protection. You can also apply online at mywelfare.ie using a MyGovID.
For Newborns
When a baby is born in Ireland, the hospital or maternity unit will usually provide you with the CB1 form at discharge, or notify you how to apply. Apply as soon as possible — payment is backdated to the month of birth if you apply within 12 months.
