Jobseeker's Benefit & Jobseeker's Allowance

If you lose your job, you may be entitled to Jobseeker's Benefit (based on PRSI contributions) or Jobseeker's Allowance (means-tested). Both require you to be available for and actively seeking work.

Key takeaway

If you lose your job, you may be entitled to Jobseeker's Benefit (based on PRSI contributions) or Jobseeker's Allowance (means-tested). Both require you to be available for and actively seeking work.

Key things to know

  • Jobseeker's Benefit is PRSI-based — you need sufficient contributions to qualify.
  • Jobseeker's Allowance is means-tested — your income and savings are assessed.
  • Apply within 7 days of becoming unemployed to avoid losing entitlement for days not claimed.
  • You must be available for and genuinely seeking full-time work while claiming.
  • Payments are made to your bank account every Tuesday.

Jobseeker's Benefit (JB)

Jobseeker's Benefit is paid from the Social Insurance Fund and is available to people who have lost their job and have enough PRSI contributions. It is not means-tested — it does not matter what savings or assets you have.

PRSI Requirements

To qualify for Jobseeker's Benefit, you generally need:

  • At least 104 weeks of Class A PRSI contributions, and
  • 39 weeks of PRSI paid in the governing contribution year (usually 2 years before the year you claim)

Payment Rate and Duration

The rate (2025) is approximately €232 per week for adults — check mywelfare.ie for the current rate. JB is paid for up to 9 months (39 weeks) if you have 260+ PRSI contributions, or 6 months (26 weeks) if you have fewer. After JB runs out, you may qualify for Jobseeker's Allowance instead.

Jobseeker's Allowance (JA)

Jobseeker's Allowance is a means-tested payment for people who do not qualify for JB, or whose JB has run out. Your household income, savings, and other resources are assessed. You must satisfy the Habitual Residence Condition (HRC). The rate is similar to JB but is reduced if you have means above a certain level.

How to Apply

  1. Apply online at mywelfare.ie (using a verified MyGovID) or in person at your local Intreo Centre
  2. Apply within 7 days of becoming unemployed — payments are not backdated beyond your application date
  3. Bring: PPS number, proof of identity, bank details, details of your most recent employer

Conditions for Claiming

While claiming, you must be:

  • Unemployed (or working less than 4 days per week)
  • Available for full-time work
  • Genuinely seeking work — you may be asked to show evidence of job applications
  • Capable of work

You must sign on and report to your Intreo case officer regularly. Failure to meet conditions can result in payment being suspended.

EU/EEA Citizens and HRC

EU/EEA citizens must satisfy the Habitual Residence Condition to claim Jobseeker's Allowance. If you have been working in Ireland and just became unemployed, you will generally satisfy the HRC. If you have recently arrived and have not been working, it is more difficult. PRSI-based Jobseeker's Benefit does not require the HRC.

If you worked in another EU/EEA country before Ireland, your foreign social insurance contributions can be combined (totalised) with your Irish PRSI to help you qualify for Jobseeker's Benefit — ask for a U1 form from your previous country's social insurance authority.
